Knee deep in stupor;

Igwe staggered to and fro;

Shouting at the top of his voice;

Give me my land he said to the tree;

Still, still sat the mango tree;

It really had no choice.

He held on passionately;

Now whispering to the tree;

Like to a lover ever so sweetly;

Give me my land I pray thee;

Still sat the owner of the land.

The mango screamed at the top of its roots;

It is I who should be begging;

I’m soon to be cut off from my home;

So that you can erect your own;

I pray you choke on your vomit.

Sadly the drunk couldn’t hear,

At dawn, he sharpened his axe.
